Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) has endorsed three new investment projects with a total capital of US$15.7 million in Kampong Speu province and Phnom Penh capital. 2,279 jobs were created.

Figures released by the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation in a press conference held on Thursday 11th August by the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit.

The manufacturing sector is estimated to contribute 39.9 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2022, said the ministry’s Secretary of State and Spokesperson H.E. Heng Sokkung.

Cambodia’s manufacturing was valued at approximately US$7.57 billion in the first semester of this year, a 75 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The Kingdom has in total 1,947 active factories as of July with a total investment value of US$15 billion, the ministry’s report showed, pointing out that those factories create a million jobs for local people.

Of the total manufacturing output, some US$5.26 billion worth of products were exported and the rest were sold domestically.

The garment, footwear and travel goods industry is the largest foreign exchange earner for Cambodia.

Cambodia has become world’s fifth largest exporter in the bicycle industry and the No. 1 exporter to the European Union with 13 factories based here.

January-June period this year Cambodia earned US$505 million in bicycle exports, an increase by 104 percent from US$247.5 million registered in the same period last year.

Cambodia's banana export to China is also expected to reach 500,000 tons in 2022.

With international trade amounting up to US$32.82 billion in the first seven months of this year, a year-on-year increase by 21.3 percent. From January to July, Cambodia exported US$13.78 billion worth of goods to foreign markets, up 30.7 percent compared to the same period last year.

The Kingdom’s total imports rose by 15.4 percent during the said period to US$19.05 billion.

Trade volume between Cambodia and China was valued at $6.97 billion in the first seven months of 2022, up 15.6 percent year-on-year.

Asian shares turned mixed on Monday after China's central bank trimmed key lending rates as a raft of economic data missed forecasts.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) was flat, having bounced 0.9% last week.

Japan's Nikkei (.N225) rose 1.0%; EUROSTOXX 50 futures added 0.5% and FTSE futures rose 0.4%. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures were both down around 0.2% after last week's gains.

Brent slipped 45 cents to $97.70, while U.S. crude fell 48 cents to $91.61 per barrel.

The price of bitcoin briefly hit $25,000 on Sunday for the first time since June; it peaked at $25,119, and then finished up around $24,850.
